Mattia Bottolo beats the block of Marko Podrascanin and Giulio Pinali as he leads Padova to a stunning win over Trentino in the Italian league.

An incredible performance by Kioene Padova at Trento has knocked Itas Trentino off the top of the standings in the Italian men's league, leaving Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza and Sir Safety Conad Perugia the sole undefeated sides of the world's premier domestic competition after midweek action.

With 21-year-old Mattia Bottolo firing off a match high of 24 points and Germany's Linus Weber adding another 22 (including three aces from each), Padova served Trentino with their first defeat of the season with a sensational 3-2 (17-25, 30-28, 26-24, 16-25, 19-17) victory.

Trentino missed the chance to extend their unbeaten run, but failed to convert four match points before Georgi Petrov blocked his fellow-Bulgarian Matey Kaziyski to give Padova the advantage. Bottolo then served hard to throw the home team out of sync and Weber attacked twice - his second attempt out of bounds down the line but forcing a net touch from the block for a phenomenal end to an epic match.

Piacenza, however, recovered from dropping the first set and saw off Leo Shoes PerkinElmer Modena 3-1 (20-25, 25-21, 25-20, 25-23) to make it four out of four and climb to the top of the standings.

The win came on the back of 25 points by Turkey's Adis Lagumdzija to counter the 22 of France's Earvin Ngapeth for Modena, as Piacenza outserved the home side 10 aces (five from Francesco Recine alone, who also got in 10 kills from 17 swings for 59%) to 5.

Perugia also remained undefeated - and in fact are still on full points - though they've only played three matches so far this season, with a 3-1 (25-19, 23-25, 25-16, 25-17) win on the road over Gioiella Prisma Taranto.

Luxembourg's Kamil Rychlicki and Cuba-born Pole Wilfredo Leon scored 15 points each to lead Perugia - though the match high of 20 came from Taranto's Giulio Sabbi.

But defending champions Cucine Lube Civitanova seem to have found their winning ways after back-to-back defeats to Piacenza and Trentino (either side of being knocked out from the Supercup by Monza) with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-20) sweep of Verona Volley at home.

Scoring for Lube came from all around, but Cuba's Marlon Yant just edged his teammates for a match high of 15 points.

Vero Volley Monza are also right up there amongst the leaders of the table, after Germany's Georg Grozer thundered off 21 points, including five aces and 15/25 for 60% in attack to lead them to a 3-1 (25-17, 25-19, 19-25, 25-14) on the road at the Pala Mauro de Andre over Consar RCM Ravenna.

Elsewhere on Wednesday night, France's Jean Patry bagged a match high of 19 points as he led Allianz of Milan to a 3-0 (25-20, 31-29, 25-23) shutout of Tonno Callipo Calabria Vibo Valentia - as the two Japanese superstars of the Italian League, Yuki Ishikawa and Yuji Nishida clashed.
