Stam & Schoon in action in Tlaxcala

While the FIVB World Ranking leaders in both genders remained unchanged after the Tlaxcala Challenge, despite their absence from the tournament, there are new entries in positions two and three of the men’s chart and position three in the women’s. The movers were the highest ranked Dutch pairs, Katja Stam and Raisa Schoon in the women's and Stefan Boermans and Yorick de Groot in the men's, as well as Latvian standouts Aleksandrs Samoilovs and Janis Smedins.

Tlaxcala silver medallists Stam and Schoon earned 760 points towards a new total of 3,380, moving from eighth to third in the women’s ranking, behind number one Agatha Bednarczuk and Eduarda Santos Lisboa of Brazil, who no longer play together, and number two Nina Brunner and Tanja Huberli of Switzerland, who skipped the Beach Pro Tour's inaugural event in preparation for their debut at the Rosarito Elite 16 tournament this week. The rising Dutch stars are just 200 points behind the Swiss.

Claiming 800 points, Tlaxcala winners Barbara Seixas and Carol Solberg of Brazil shot up from 13th to fifth in the ranking on a new total of 3,200, sharing that spot with world champions Sarah Pavan and Melissa Humana-Paredes of Canada, and just 60 short of fourth-ranked Karla Borger and Julia Sude of Germany, who finished ninth in Mexico.

The other two Brazilian semifinalists made great leaps up the ladder. Bronze medallists Elize Maia and Thamela Coradello moved from position 32 to 16, while Taiana Lima and Hegeile Almeida jumped from 83 to 48.

Tlaxcala top seeds Boermans and De Groot may not have done as well as expected, having to withdraw for medical reasons with a ninth-place finish, but the 460 points earned were enough to move from fourth to second in the men’s World Ranking on a total of 3,760 points, some 800 short of the world’s number ones Cherif Younousse and Ahmed Tijan of Qatar, who will start their Beach Pro Tour adventure in Rosarito this week.

Samoilovs and Smedins took the bronze in Tlaxcala and also shifted two positions up, from fifth to third on 3,600 points. Experienced Dutchmen Alexander Brouwer and Robert Meeuwsen improved from ninth to fifth after reaching the Tlaxcala quarterfinals, leaving Olympic champions and previous ranking leaders Anders Mol and Christian Sorum of Norway behind in sixth.

Surprise finalists Noe Aravena and Vicente Droguett rose from 34 to 25 to become Chile’s new highest-ranked pair on 2,140 points, just 10 clear of Chilean cousins Marco Grimalt and Esteban Grimalt, who dropped to 26th.

Renato Carvalho and Vitor Felipe of Brazil, who started from the qualifiers in Tlaxcala to reach the semis, leaped 17 positions up to number 30.
